Where the file lives

Which copy is active depends on SteamCloud in options.ini. With SteamCloud=1, the default, the game uses the cloud copy; with SteamCloud=0 it uses the Documents copy.

Documents copy (SteamCloud=0)

%USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Games\Binding of Isaac Repentance+\persistentgamedata1.dat

Steam Cloud copy (SteamCloud=1)

<Steam>\userdata\<AccountID>\250900\remote\rep+persistentgamedata1.dat

The number is the save slot. On Steam Deck and Linux the game runs through Proton and the Documents folder sits in steamapps/compatdata/250900/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Documents/My Games/. Full details, including OneDrive and multiple accounts, in where the save file is.

How to apply the edited file

  1. Close the game and keep a copy of the original file.
  2. Switch Steam Cloud off in the game’s Steam properties, or play with SteamCloud=0.
  3. Put the exported file into the active folder under the same name it had.
  4. Launch the game and check the slot. When you turn the cloud back on, choose Local Save in the conflict window.
  5. To push unlocks to Steam achievements, open Stats → Secrets and press Alt+F2.

The installation guide covers the details, and the Steam Cloud guide explains the conflict window.

Questions people ask

Is the file uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is parsed and rebuilt in this browser tab; the site has no server-side component that receives files.

Can I get banned for editing a save?

The Steam store lists no anti-cheat for the game, and neither Nicalis nor the wiki describe any validation of the save beyond its checksum and achievement count. That is not a guarantee, and online co-op uses the save of the player with the fewest unlocks. Edit at your own risk and keep a backup.

Does it work with Repentance or Afterbirth+ saves?

No. Only Repentance+ files, which carry 642 achievement entries for 641 achievements. Repentance files have 638 entries and are rejected with a clear message. See moving a save to Repentance+.

My file is rejected as an older Repentance+ build

Repentance+ builds before patch 1.9.7.13 from September 2025 wrote files with 641 entries and 521 counters. Update the game, launch it once so it writes the current layout, back the file up, then load that file.

Why don’t my Steam achievements change?

The game syncs unlocks with Steam on demand: open Stats, go to Secrets and press Alt+F2. A fully unlocked file pushes hundreds of achievements at once, all dated today, and that cannot be undone.

What about REPENTOGON?

REPENTOGON keeps its own save next to the vanilla one and syncs them by taking the higher values. Edit the vanilla file with the game and REPENTOGON closed; new unlocks are picked up, removals may be undone by the sync.

Which game version is supported?

The current Repentance+ layout, tested against v1.9.7.17.J460 from April 2026. If a future patch changes the file, the editor will reject it rather than guess.
